Universal Electric Fuel Pump Installation Instructions
 

WARNING:

GASOLINE IS INVOLVED.  WORK IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA AWAY FROM SPARKS AND OPEN FLAMES SUCH AS PILOT LIGHT.  REMOVE NEGATIVE (-) BATTERY CABLE FROM POST. TO REDUCE THE RISK OF FIRE AND PERSONAL INJURY, IT IS NECESSARY TO RELIEVE THE FULE SYSTEM PRESSURE BEFORE SERVICING FUEL SYSTEM COMPONENTS. HAVE A CLASS FIRE EXTINGUISHER CLOSE BY AND STORE FUEL IN AN APPROVED CONTAINER.

 

 

 

Note:

  • For safety reasons, it is recommended an A-68301 Pressure Safety Switch be installed.  This will prevent engine damage if the engine stops without the ignition switch in the off position.
  • To prevent fuel pump failure, installation of a high quality fuel filter on the inlet side of the pump, is required.
  • On high performance applications when used as a booster for a mechanical fuel pump, it is recommended that a Super Street or Super Strip pump be used. Super Street or Super Strip fuel pumps incorporate a heavier diaphragm. If a mechanical pump is not used, the engine opening should be covered with a fuel pump block-off plate.
  • When using two (2) Universal Electric Fuel Pumps, they should be placed in parallel to give increased volume without excess pressure. 3/8 fuel line should be used to avoid restrictions.
  • Install a 404-500HP Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator if reduced fuel pressure is required (See Fig. D).
  • For quieter operation, an 18-14U Quiet Pack should be installed.

 

    1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
    2. Mount the fuel pump close to the existing fuel lines and tank, but away from any exhaust system component. Place the pump and bracket assembly as near to the bottom of the fuel tank as possible, but never more than 24 inches above the top of the tank.
    3. Remove a section of fuel line where the pump is to be mounted. (A tube cutter is recommended when cutting fuel lines. Flush the fuel line to prevent metal chips from entering the fuel system.)
    4. Install mounting bracket onto vehicles chassis/frame with 3 self-tapping screws or optional #18-14U Quiet Pack. Place ground (-) wire from pump under mounting screw or bolt (See Fig. A & B).
    5. Install the fuel pump on the mounting bracket with the outlet towards the engine and the terminals facing downward (See Fig. A & B).
    6. Assemble the (supplied) fuel fittings to the fuel pump (See Fig. A). (This pump is equipped with dry-seal fuel fittings.  Do not use Teflon tape or pipe sealant on pipe fittings, or pump breakage will occur.)
    7. Connect the fuel lines to the fuel pump, using 3/8 reinforced rubber fuel line (not supplied) and clamps provided. (To prevent fuel pump failure, installation of a high quality fuel filter on the inlet side of the pump, is required.) (See Fig. A.)
    8. Using #14 gauge wire, follow the wiring diagram (See Fig. A & B) and connect the pump to the vehicle's electrical system.  If the vehicle has a pre-existing oil pressure safety switch which operates either a warning light or gauge, it is recommended that a T-adapter be installed into the engine block and both the O.E. and the A-68301 Pressure Safety Switch be used (See Fig. C.). (Route wires away from heat and road hazards, and anchor securely to prevent vibration and chafing. Full battery voltage must be available to the pump when the ignition switch is on. Pump ground must be the same as the battery ground.)
    9. Install the two (2) terminal wires onto the pump terminals (See Fig. A & B). Re-connect the negative battery cable, start the engine, and check for fuel leaks. Repair any leaks before releasing the vehicle.

 

WARNING:

NOT FOR USE IN AIRCRAFT OR OTHER NON-AUTOMOTIVE USE.  THE USE OF A PUMP FOR OTHER THAN THE APPLICATIONS LISTED WILL VOID THE WARRANTY AND WILL DO SEVERE ENGINE DAMAGE.
